Skin Care

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is the most effective non-surgical method of skin resurfacing to reverse the unwanted signs of aging. The process requires no healing time and can be done on your lunch break. It refines the texture of the skin, stimulate collage and elastin production, diminishes fine lines, minimizes large pores and  discoloration, improves scars over time. We use a tubular hand piece through which air is circulated to produce a fine stream of micro  crystals. The crystals are blasted onto the skin causing the top dead  skin layers (Stratum Corneum) to be removed along with the skin’s  impurities, resulting in firmer youthful looking skin.  A vacuum tube  from within sweeps up both the crystals and the cellular debris,  leaving the skin clean.  The strength of the treatment varies from  very light to intense, based on what the skin needs.

Microdermabrasion is ideal for:
-People who can’t afford of simply not ready for laser treatments
-Active individuals who don’t want any down time interfering with social or outdoor activities (executives, models, athletes,  entertainers)
-Sensitive skin that reacts to chemicals
-Skin conditions such as: acne/surgical scars, chicken pox scars,  hypertrophic scars, enlarged pores, superficial lines & winkles, pigmentation & age spots, sun damaged skin, blackheads, whiteheads, dull skin.

Our unit is certified by the FDA, and has a built-in LED light therapy as well as Oxygen infusion.
Red light: Aids in healing, stimulates circulation and repairs the elastin fibers within tissue to firm skin.
Blue light: Kills acne bacteria that responsible for inflammation.

The Importance and Benefits of Skin Care

The skin is the largest organ in the body, approximately 15% of our body weight. The primary function of the skin is to protect the underlying tissues from abrasion, bacteria, viruses and environmental toxins. A healthy skin is a strong physical, biological and chemical barrier between the outside elements and the internal body. It is our first line of defense!

The protein called keratin makes us “waterproof”, melanin fights against UV radiation and the acidic secretion called acid-mental inhibits the growth of bacteria on the surface.

When the skin is injured, diseased or weekend due to internal or external factors, it will compromise the ability to protect our body and to fulfill other important functions.

The skin manufactures vitamin D, which is necessarily for the absorption of calcium and normal development of bones.

When the skin is exposed to the sun, the UV rays will transform the cholesterol molecules into the most active, natural form of vitamin D. Supplements are not fully active, they require conversion by the liver and kidneys before they become useful for the body.

It is very important to spend 10-15 min. in the sun couple times a week without wearing sunblock. Please choose early morning or late evening hours, DO NOT bake yourself!  Overexposure to UV rays can cause aging, hyper-pigmentation and skin cancer. Please note, dark-skinned individuals can’t synthesize adequate amount of vitamin D, because the pigment naturally blocks the sunlight!

The skin also plays critical role in regulating body temperature. As the blood vessels dilate, heat is discharged into the atmosphere. The skin starts to sweat to cool the body down to prevent overheating. It is very important to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause the inability to sweat, and it could be life threatening!

Through perspiration the skin also eliminates toxins and metabolic wastes. Poor dietary habits, environmental toxins and stress will greatly effect the quality and appearance of your skin. Processed food, preservatives, saturated fat, dairy, gluten, refined sugar, artificial flavoring and coloring will increase the toxicity of the body.

THE FIRST SIGNS OF TOXICITY IS CONGESTION AND PIMPLES! These are little messengers, telling us that something is wrong! Other skin conditions, such as rosacea, psoriasis, eczema can also be aggravated by poor diet, nutritional deficiency and inappropriate skin care regimen. Neglecting or mistreating these symptoms could lead to more serious problems and complications.

Trying to “remedy” these conditions by over-exfoliating or applying harsh chemicals on the already toxic, over-stressed skin may not be your best solution. It could lead to more irritation, thinning of the skin, damage to the oil glands, causing extreme dryness and deep wrinkles later on.

The skin can break, and bacteria, viruses can freely enter  your body through the open lesions, causing infection that usually leaves severe scarring behind. Properly addressing these specific concerns can help to restore the skin, improve self esteem and social behavior, especially in teens.

Your skin will speak for itself by looking radiant!

The History and Importance of Exfoliation

The history of skin care and exfoliation is ancient. We all know that Cleopatra was bathing in milk to smooth her skin, knowing very little about the benefits  of lactic acid. Marie Antoinette used red wine, taking advantage of the benefits of tartaric acid.

Egyptians used grains and oatmeal, and among Japanese ladies pulverized pearls and sand were very popular. In the 1930’s the first chemical peels hit the market. They were based on carbolic acid (phenol). Ouch, it must have been very painful to stay beautiful in those years. In the 1960’s Retin-A was developed to treat acne. It was a huge improvement in exfoliation ingredients. Unfortunately it still could cause irritation and photosensitivity. The research continued, and decades later in the 1990’s Alpha Hydroxy Acids have arrived. Developments continued, and about the same time Microdermabrasion also became very popular.

The overwhelming abundance of sophisticated products, machines, lasers lead to the modern days obsession with exfoliation, resulting in increased skin sensitivity. Exfoliation can cause irritation to the skin and capillaries if overused, or used incorrectly.

Always consult with a professional before starting a regimen!

Exfoliation is an ancient method of removing dead skin cells from the surface of Stratum Corneum to rejuvenate the skin. It speeds up cell renewal by stimulating the most inner layer of the epidermis called Stratum Germinativum to push new cells upwards toward the surface. Removing the dead cells has many beneficial effect to the skin. It relieves the signs of aging, smoothes deep wrinkles and fine lines, removes dry patches, helps to clear congestion, reduces comedones and pustules, improves hyper-pigmentation, allows more effective penetration of products.

Skin Conditions REQUIRING Exfoliation

Acne

We talked about it earlier that acne is the first sign of toxicity. Also, there is an overproduction of sebum and dead skin cells. The skin produces 4-5 times more cells than healthy skin. These cells will bind together with the sebum, and retained in the follicles as well as on the surface of the skin, causing congestion and break outs. Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids are highly beneficial. They dissolve the sebum and the NMF (glue-like substance that keeps the dead cells together), also has antibacterial properties.

Dehydration

It is a condition that can be seen on all skin types. Lack of moisture in the skin will cause gaps between the cells, that will lead to the evaporation of more moisture from below. Imagine, what would happen to the bricks, if the cement suddenly disappeared from the walls? The whole house would collapse. Don’t let that happen to your skin. Drinking plenty of water is half of the success, since it can’t reach the most otter layers of the epidermis. Removing the dry, flaky cells is the must in order to improves the skin’s ability to retain moisture.

Aging Skin

The cell renewal slows done with aging. This means that it take much longer for the new cells to reach the surface of the skin. In our 20’s it take about 20-25 days, in our 30’s it is 30-35 days. The old, damaged, dull looking cells will lie on the surface much longer, waiting for the replacement from below. Exfoliation will speeds up cell renewal. Removal of the top layers of the epidermis will stimulate the new cells to move up FASTER and rebuild the layers, resulting in a more youthful looking appearance.

Pigmentation

UV light exposure stimulates the skin to produce more melanin to protect itself from the damage. It can lead to uneven skin tone, epidermal hyper-pigmentation. A series of AHA exfoliation helps to remove damaged cells, leaving the skin more balanced, healthier looking.
